The geographical boundaries of the Northwest
Corner vary depending on whom you talk to, but most people in these parts agree that it's roughly the six towns in northwestern Litchfield County that comprise the Region
One School District: Canaan, Cornwall, Falls Village,
Kent, Salisbury and Sharon. Some people include towns such as Litchfield
and New Milford in the Northwest Corner. Nothing wrong with those places, but folks around here think that's a stretch.
It is a region rich not only in heritage, but in caring and volunteerism. When calls go out for volunteers, hands go up immediately. It's the kind of place that has everything from a world class auto racing track, Lime Rock Park, to four-star
restaurants, art galleries, pristine mountain lakes and a renowned chamber music festival, Music Mountain. There are, however, no shopping
malls in sight.
To the north, in the Berkshires, is Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston
Symphony. Just a hop, skip and jump away sits Jacob's Pillow , one of the best seasonal dance festivals east of the Mississippi. Within an hour's drive, there are several downhill ski
resorts. Each town offers a strong set of recreational opportunities in their own right. There are churches serving almost every faith. And if that isn't enough, you can hop a commuter train and be in Manhattan's Grand Central Terminal in a little over two hours.
The local public schools or Region
One School District enjoy a fine reputation, but if private school is your preference, there are six in the Northwest
Corner and five more within easy driving distance in the nearby states of Massachusetts and New
York.
But best of all, there are the people -- an eclectic mix of native-born professionals and tradespeople, plus weekenders. There are lots of artists and writers. There are retired Wall Street analysts, plumbers and electricians, farmers and innkeepers, doctors, lawyers and teachers. In a word, this is a heck of a place to live.
